I lost a friend today…again.
The last time I used this title it was for my friend Tina Jowers. She died of an abdominal tumor. This post is for my confidante, Jeff Dunn. He died June 22nd 2010 just before 5am, peacefully with family members, of a similar cancerous complication called : Leiomyosarcoma.
Memories… they always surface easier when you lose someone. I remember when Tina, Jeff and I would sit about at Glenn Island and talk about how my music videos for “Green Eyed Lady” should be. It was then when I realized how creative he was and just how much I needed and appreciated his mind and “vision”.
Jeff was like a metaphysical creature. He could see what others could not with his inner eye...which saw far more than what our own eyes, let alone his draped in blindness could see. Jeff was special. He had gifts that manifested splendidly when he was younger. He had a wonderful inner glow that drew people to him and an indomitable will for striving to be just as “cool” as everyone else.
I thought of him like a younger brother. I remember when he was 15 and I’d go over to the house and hang out in his room. We’d geek out on Star Trek spoken records or some bizarre 80’s toys of that day. It’s funny how many memories flood you when your friends are gone.
Jeff was the kind of guy you’d be comfortable knowing was always there to lend a non judgmental ear. He had a knack of understanding you no matter what. It was this gift of people knowing that he was able to be the best social networker without needing AOL, Myspace or Facebook. It was because of him, I met Lara Sky which was how I got back into recording. It was his ears that guided me in what needed to be tweaked whether it was a recording of a concept or an actual track. He could hear what others couldn’t. I met many great friends because of him. He was the catalyst… the nexus. I met him, which begat meeting Joe Apuzzo, then Mike Sicialiano, then the O’Connors, then the world of Pat’s in Eastchester… He truly is the type of man one thinks of when they wonder..."Had I not met him...what would I have missed? What path would I have taken?”
The problem with Jeff was you could easily get comfortable thinking he’d always be there as if it were yesterday… but now he’s not. He’s gone. All I have now are memories.
I remember the “Jeff cane dance” when we took him to new wave clubs, whether it was Kryptons in Banksville, or Ward 6 in Greenwich Village, he always made friends even before he started with the seeing eye dogs like Laser.
I remember the joke we had that when he had to grab your arm to follow along without a cane we all, including he, laughed when we gave him the song “Everything Counts” by Depeche Mode, calling it the “Jeff song” because of the line “The grabbing hands grab all they can...”
Jeff you were in my inner circle. You knew so much about me. You are irreplaceable. We experienced many different worlds and you did it with sheer wonder. The Karizan Empire and its parties, the club nights and then there was just coming to Mt. Kisco where we’d talk about music and pushing my singing voice. At a time you taught me how to put power and emotion into my voice. How did you know these things? Wise you were whether you knew it or not. Those times alone in the store with Lara just jamming helped shape allot of what I do today.
It warmed me to know you were listening to my radio show also. Though you coudln’t be in chat, you texted me thoughts, encouraged me, praised my mixes and even called during a song just to tell me your were enjoying yourself.
Jeff you believed in my music career even when I stopped. Your belief would push me on and now you join the ranks of the fallen Warriors I’d promised on their graves that I’d do it not just for me but for the spirit of belief you put in me.
So now I leave this as my testament..my eulogy to you oh dear friend. I couldn’t bare seeing you deteriorate and now I feel so rotten that I never got to say goodbye to you either. You spiraled downward so quickly… I miss you more and more because I didn’t take the time and now I kick myself with regret. However you left us a legacy of friendships like the branches of the tree that was your life. We now reunite in your honor… friends finding each other anew...and start again.
Know that I still feel your essence… I will carry your memory to every studio session...to each and any performance I dedicate it to you and those who believed.
I miss you man. I am thankful your suffering is over and your spirit has transcended to Stovokor. “
MajQa’… Q’apla!”

Tonight at 10pm for those staying in: DJ Darkstar spins a special dark and sexy love web on KMRL www
Aaaah.. the last minute plans. I haz one! I will do a special Valentine's night show starting at 10pm til Midnight
It's like this: I can't go out so if I'm gonna stay in, I'm going to do a show for Valentine's day. It will be sexy and groovy, hot and steamy and irreverent to love day. Oh Hell! WHo am I kidding? I have no idea what it will be like. It won't be a Tunnel because I'll stop and talk on occasion, but it won't be a Darkhours because it will have varying genre's in music. I do know that it will feature a block or two of "The Sexiest Songs of Darkness" .
So if you have a lover, curl up and listen, if you don't then let's have an Anti-Valentine's bash and party like gigolo's and strippers and celebrate hedonism!
What the hell.... it's free, right? Why not give it a shot if you're new to internet radio.
